The PRISM decision audit

Five moves, ten questions, one honest look at your last decision.

Think of the last decision that mattered. Answer for what you actually did, not what you like to think you did. PRISM is the method my book teaches before any decision that matters: Problem Framing, Research, Interpretation, Synthesis, with Metacognition standing over them all.

Problem Framing · Are we solving the right problem?

1. Before options were discussed, I said the problem back in one sentence and checked we agreed it was the right one.

2. I asked what would have to be true for this to be the wrong problem entirely.

Research · What would prove me wrong?

3. I went looking for at least one piece of information that could have changed my mind.

4. For the claims that mattered most, I traced them back to where they came from, not to who repeated them.

Interpretation · What else could this mean?

5. I kept what the data said separate from the story I was telling about it.

6. I named at least one other reading of the same evidence before deciding.

Synthesis · What do all the pieces say together?

7. Before deciding, I could say what all the pieces said together, including the ones that did not fit.

8. The strongest case against the decision was on the table before the call, not after.

Metacognition · How confident should I be, and what am I missing?

9. I said how confident I was as a number, and what would change it.

10. I set a point to look back at the decision and what I missed.
